Why line array

The back row
hears the same show.

A single pair of speakers on sticks is loud at the front and thin at the back, so you push the volume until the first ten tables are shouting over it. An array is a column of modules aimed as one — the level stays even from the dance floor to the last table, at a volume people can still talk over between songs.
